Real estate agent resume: examples, skills & how to pass ATS

There are over 2 million licensed real estate agents in the US, but most of them have never written a traditional resume. When applying to a brokerage, a real estate company, a property management firm, or a corporate real estate role, your performance record is everything — and the resume is where you prove it.

Most agents don't need a resume to work with clients. But you need one when applying to join a brokerage, move to a different firm, transition into commercial or corporate real estate, or pursue a real estate-adjacent role (lending, property management, development). This guide covers all of those situations.

What real estate employers look for

Transaction volume and GCI. Dollar figures matter in real estate. Gross commission income, total transaction volume, number of sides closed per year — these are the metrics that separate a productive agent from one who struggled.

Specialisation. Residential vs. commercial, buyer-side vs. listing-side, geographic farm area, luxury, first-time buyers, investors — specialisation signals expertise, not limitation.

Licence status. Salesperson, broker, or broker-associate. Multi-state licences. Active status and expiry. This comes first.

Client satisfaction and referrals. Close rate, days on market vs. market average, list-to-sale price ratio, repeat client or referral percentage — these signal quality, not just volume.

Structure for a real estate agent resume

  1. Contact info (include your licence number)
  2. Licence & certifications block
  3. Professional summary (3–4 lines)
  4. Work experience (reverse chronological)
  5. Skills
  6. Education

Licence and certifications: what to include

Licensed Real Estate Salesperson — State of California DRE Licence #01234567 — Active — Exp. 05/2027

Licensed Real Estate Broker — State of Nevada NRED Licence #B.1234567 — Active

Certifications:

  • ABR (Accredited Buyer's Representative) — NAR, 2022
  • SRS (Seller Representative Specialist) — NAR, 2023
  • GRI (Graduate, REALTOR® Institute) — 2021
  • e-PRO (Digital Marketing) — NAR, 2022

NAR designations (ABR, SRS, GRI, CRS, SRES, CCIM for commercial) are genuine differentiators. If you have them, make them visible.

Work experience: how to write real estate bullets

Real estate bullets fail when they describe activities. They work when they show results.

Weak:

Helped buyers and sellers with their real estate transactions. Listed homes and showed properties to clients.

Strong:

Closed 28 residential transactions in FY2025 representing $14.2M in total volume — 112% of personal production goal. Maintained an average list-to-sale price ratio of 101.3%, 2.1 points above the county average. 68% of new clients came from referrals or repeat business.

More strong bullets:

  • Listed and sold 18 homes in the first 12 months of licensure, totalling $7.8M in volume. Average days on market: 11 — vs. 34-day market average. Achieved REALTOR® of the Year nomination through the local association.
  • Managed a commercial real estate portfolio of 8 industrial and flex-office properties totalling 240,000 sq ft. Achieved 97% occupancy across the portfolio through proactive lease renewals and tenant retention programmes.
  • Built a residential farm territory from zero to 14% market share in a 600-home neighbourhood over 3 years, using a consistent direct mail and door-knocking programme.
  • Negotiated a $180K price reduction on behalf of a buyer in a multiple-offer situation by identifying title defects and leveraging inspection findings — saving the client 9% off list price.
  • Managed a team of 4 buyer's agents as a team lead; team closed 110 units in FY2025, up from 72 units the prior year.

Passing ATS for real estate roles

Most individual agent positions don't use ATS — you're typically applying directly to a broker or office manager. But corporate real estate roles (REIT employees, property management companies, corporate facilities, real estate tech) do use ATS. For those:

  • Include your full licence title: "Licensed Real Estate Salesperson" or "Real Estate Broker"
  • Use full NAR designation names: "Accredited Buyer's Representative (ABR)" not just "ABR"
  • Include MLS and transaction platform names: Dotloop, DocuSign, Skyslope, specific MLS names
  • Add real estate industry terms: CMA, cap rate, escrow, title, listing agreement, dual agency

Frequently asked questions about real estate resumes

Do I need a resume to join a brokerage? Most brokerages don't formally require one, but showing up with a strong resume immediately differentiates you from other agent recruits. It signals professionalism and makes it easier for the broker to assess your production level.

Should I include transactions I worked on as a team member? Yes, with honest attribution. "Participated in 35 transactions as a buyer's agent on a 4-person team totalling $22M" is accurate and credible.

What if I'm a new agent with no production history? Focus on your transferable experience: sales, customer service, negotiation, finance, project management. Add any real estate coursework or designations in progress. Your brokerage selection matters more at this stage than your resume.

How do I handle production data if I'm joining a new market? State your numbers from your prior market clearly. "Closed $12M in Phoenix residential volume; relocating to Austin and licensed TX 2026" is a complete and honest picture.
