HVAC technician resume: how to write one that gets callbacks
There are over 110,000 unfilled HVAC positions in the US right now — and that number is growing. The labour shortage is real. But contractors still screen applicants for the right licences, EPA certification, and relevant equipment experience before making a call.
HVAC work spans residential service and installation, commercial HVAC/R, industrial refrigeration, and building automation systems. A resume that doesn't specify what kind of HVAC work you've done — and at what scale — leaves contractors guessing. This guide shows you exactly what to put on your HVAC resume.
What HVAC employers look for
EPA Section 608 certification is non-negotiable for any role involving refrigerants. If you have it, it should be visible immediately. If you don't yet have it, state that you're pursuing it.
Equipment experience. Residential split systems are not the same as commercial rooftop units or chiller plants. Contractors want specifics: what brands, what tonnage, what systems.
Service vs. installation. Service technicians and installers are different skill sets. Some contractors want both, others want specialists. Be clear about which you do and what percentage of your work is each.
EPA Type (I, II, III, or Universal). Universal certification covers all refrigerant types. List your type specifically.

State licensing requirements vary significantly. If you hold a contractor licence or journeyman certificate in your state, list it with the licence number and expiry.

Give service calls and installations their proper detail. Generic language loses work.

Frequently asked questions about HVAC resumes
Do I need a state licence to list on my resume? If your state requires one for HVAC work and you have it, absolutely. If you're an apprentice or working under a licensed contractor, note your status clearly: "Working under Contractor Licence [Number]."
How long should an HVAC resume be? One page for technicians with under 8 years of experience. Two pages is fine for senior techs with extensive certification and equipment breadth.
Should I list residential and commercial separately? If you do both, mention the split in your summary ("60% commercial, 40% residential") or list them as distinct experience items if you've worked for separate employers in each sector.
What if I've worked mostly for one company for many years? List the employer once and use separate bullet sections or sub-headings to show how your role evolved (apprentice → journeyman → lead tech). This shows growth, not stagnation.
