Physical therapist resume: PT, PTA & DPT guide

Physical therapy is growing at 18% over the next decade — the fastest of any healthcare occupation — adding 47,000 new jobs. But strong demand doesn't mean reduced screening. PT positions still filter on licensure, specialisation, and clinical experience before a single interview is offered.

Physical therapist resumes need to communicate a lot in a short space: state licensure, clinical specialisations, patient population, productivity metrics, and any specialty certifications. This guide walks through every section.

What PT hiring managers and clinic directors look for

Licensure is the baseline. No PT licence = no call. Make it the first thing visible after your contact information.

Clinical setting and population. Outpatient ortho, acute care, SNF, paediatrics, home health, sports — these are not interchangeable. Hiring managers want experience that matches their setting.

Productivity data. In outpatient settings especially, 1.0 patients/hour, units per visit, and productivity percentage are standard metrics. Including them shows you understand the business of PT.

Specialty certifications. OCS, SCS, GCS, COMT, CSCS — these signal advanced clinical competency and are strong differentiators, especially for outpatient and sports roles.

Documentation system experience. WebPT, Clinicient, EPIC Rehab, Raintree — if you know the system they use, say so.

Structure for a PT resume

  1. Contact information
  2. Licensure block (right under contact info)
  3. Professional summary (3–4 lines)
  4. Clinical experience (reverse chronological)
  5. Education (DPT, MPT, or BSPT with clinical rotations)
  6. Certifications & specialty credentials
  7. Skills (clinical skills, documentation systems, manual therapy techniques)

Licensure: how to list it

Physical Therapist Licence — State of Colorado Licence #PT12345 — Active — Expires 06/2027

Physical Therapist Licence — State of Texas (if applicable) Licence #PT98765 — Active

CPR/BLS Certification — American Heart Association — Exp. 03/2027

Compact Privilege (PT Compact states — if applicable)

If you hold an NPI number, you can include it. For travel PT positions, noting which states you're licensed in (and any compact privilege states) is especially important.

Work experience: how to write PT bullets

PT resumes often list duties without outcomes. Go further.

Weak:

Evaluated and treated patients with orthopaedic conditions. Developed and implemented treatment plans.

Strong:

Managed a caseload of 12–14 outpatient orthopaedic patients per day, specialising in post-surgical ACL and rotator cuff rehabilitation. Achieved an average MCID improvement on DASH and LEFS outcome measures in 87% of completed episodes of care.

More strong bullet examples:

  • Maintained 95% productivity in a high-volume outpatient clinic while managing documentation in WebPT and completing all notes same-day.
  • Led group balance and fall-prevention classes for 10–15 geriatric patients per week in a SNF setting; contributed to a 22% reduction in resident fall rates over 12 months.
  • Supervised and mentored 2 PTAs and 1 clinical intern, providing weekly performance feedback and case consultation.
  • Performed dry needling, manual joint mobilisation (Grade III–IV), and instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilisation (IASTM) as adjunct treatments; integrated into POC for 60% of orthopaedic caseload.
  • Collaborated with orthopaedic surgeons, athletic trainers, and strength coaches to manage a collegiate sports medicine caseload of 30+ athletes across 4 varsity sports.

Key metrics: patients per day, productivity percentage, outcome measure improvement rates (DASH, LEFS, NPRS, PSFS), fall rate changes, episode-of-care length.

Frequently asked questions about PT resumes

How long should a PT resume be? One page for new graduates. One to two pages for experienced PTs depending on the range of roles, specialisations, and certifications.

Should I include clinical rotation hours as a new grad? Yes. List rotation sites, specialisation, and hours. In the absence of employment history, this demonstrates your breadth of exposure.

Do I need a cover letter for PT jobs? For hospital systems and multi-site clinics, yes. For private practice and smaller outpatient clinics, a strong resume often carries more weight, but a brief tailored cover letter never hurts.

I'm a PTA — how should I frame my resume differently? The structure is similar. Lead with your PTA licence and CPR certification. In your experience bullets, be clear about what you treated under the supervising PT's plan of care, and highlight any areas where you contributed to programme design or patient education.
