ATS resume for IT jobs in India: how to pass screening at TCS, Infosys, Wipro, and MNCs

The Indian IT sector employs over 5 million people. TCS, Infosys, Wipro, HCL, and Accenture India alone receive millions of applications annually — all processed through ATS before a recruiter sees them. Getting past the system is the first problem to solve.

India's IT sector is the most competitive hiring environment in the country. The top companies — TCS, Infosys, Wipro, HCL Technologies, Tech Mahindra, Accenture India, Cognizant, Capgemini India — receive enormous application volumes and rely entirely on ATS to manage initial screening. If your resume doesn't score well in the system, no recruiter will ever read it.

This guide covers exactly how to structure and write your resume to pass ATS screening for IT roles in India.

How large Indian IT companies use ATS

Service companies (TCS, Infosys, Wipro, HCL, Cognizant, Tech Mahindra)

These companies run at massive scale. TCS alone hires 40,000–50,000 freshers in strong hiring years, and tens of thousands of lateral (experienced) hires alongside that. Their ATS processes are highly standardised:

  • Platform: SAP SuccessFactors is widely used across Indian IT majors. Some also use Taleo, Workday, or custom portals (TCS NextStep, Infosys careers portal).
  • Keyword matching: Service companies hire against specific technology stacks for specific client projects. The job posting will name exact technologies — Java 17, .NET Core, Salesforce, SAP S/4HANA, AWS, etc. Your resume needs those exact terms.
  • Years of experience filters: Lateral roles often have hard filters (e.g., "3–6 years"). If you are outside the range, ATS may auto-filter regardless of your score.
  • CGPA filter for freshers: Campus and off-campus fresher hiring typically enforces a minimum CGPA (usually 6.5 or 7.0) as a hard filter. State your CGPA explicitly with scale.

Product companies and tech MNCs (Amazon, Google, Microsoft, Adobe, Oracle India)

These companies use global ATS instances — Workday, Greenhouse, Lever, or proprietary systems — and process Indian applications through the same pipelines as international ones. Resume expectations align more with global standards: concise, metric-driven, single-column, no photo.

Mid-tier IT and consulting (Mphasis, Hexaware, NIIT Technologies, L&T Infotech, Birlasoft)

These use similar ATS platforms to the large players but typically have lower application volumes. Keyword precision is equally important; the difference is that recruiters may have more time to review borderline applications.

The keyword categories that matter for IT roles

ATS scoring for IT jobs in India maps directly to what the job description asks for. These are the categories to cover:

Programming languages

State every language you work with by its exact name. Java, Python, C#, C++, JavaScript, TypeScript, Go, Kotlin, Swift, R, Scala, PHP, Ruby. Do not group them as "OOP languages" or "scripting languages" — list each individually.

Frameworks and libraries

Spring Boot, Spring MVC, Hibernate, Django, Flask, FastAPI, Node.js, Express.js, React, Angular, Vue.js, .NET Core, ASP.NET, Microservices, REST API, GraphQL, gRPC.

Databases

MySQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle DB, SQL Server, MongoDB, Cassandra, Redis, Elasticsearch, DynamoDB, Snowflake. Include both relational and NoSQL if you've used them.

Cloud platforms

AWS (Amazon Web Services), Azure, GCP (Google Cloud Platform). Additionally: EC2, S3, Lambda, RDS, EKS, Azure DevOps, GKE — the specific services you've used score better than just the platform name.

DevOps and CI/CD

Docker, Kubernetes, Jenkins, GitLab CI, GitHub Actions, Terraform, Ansible, Helm, ArgoCD, CI/CD pipeline.

Testing

JUnit, TestNG, Selenium, Appium, Postman, REST Assured, Cypress, Jest, PyTest, manual testing, automated testing, performance testing, load testing (JMeter).

Methodologies

Agile, Scrum, Kanban, SAFe, TDD (Test-Driven Development), BDD (Behaviour-Driven Development), DevOps, SDLC, sprint planning.

Tools

Git, GitHub, Jira, Confluence, Bitbucket, VS Code, IntelliJ IDEA, Eclipse, Maven, Gradle, Postman, Splunk, Grafana, SonarQube.

Certifications (as keywords)

AWS Certified Solutions Architect, AWS Certified Developer, Azure Administrator, GCP Associate Cloud Engineer, CKA (Certified Kubernetes Administrator), Oracle Java Certification, Salesforce Certified Administrator, PMP, ITIL.

Certification names from the job description should appear verbatim in your certifications section.

Resume structure for IT professionals in India

Experienced professionals (2+ years)

  1. Contact Information
  2. Professional Summary
  3. Technical Skills
  4. Work Experience (reverse chronological)
  5. Education
  6. Certifications

Freshers / entry-level

  1. Contact Information
  2. Professional Summary
  3. Education
  4. Technical Skills
  5. Projects
  6. Internships (if any)
  7. Certifications

Contact information

Name, phone, email, LinkedIn, city. No photograph, no date of birth, no marital status.

Professional summary

2–4 lines that name your experience level, primary technology stack, and 2–3 specific skills. Keyword-load this section — it's read early by both ATS and recruiters.

Example for a Java developer with 4 years of experience:

Java developer with 4 years of experience building microservices using Spring Boot, REST APIs, and MySQL. Experienced with AWS EC2/S3, Docker, and Jenkins CI/CD pipelines. Delivered features across 3 client-facing projects in BFSI and e-commerce domains using Agile/Scrum methodology.

ATS reads: Java, microservices, Spring Boot, REST APIs, MySQL, AWS, EC2, S3, Docker, Jenkins, CI/CD, Agile, Scrum, BFSI, e-commerce.

Technical skills section

List by category. Each item should be an exact technology name.

Languages: Java, Python, JavaScript
Frameworks: Spring Boot, Hibernate, React
Databases: MySQL, MongoDB, Redis
Cloud / DevOps: AWS (EC2, S3, Lambda), Docker, Kubernetes, Jenkins
Tools: Git, Jira, Postman, IntelliJ IDEA
Methodologies: Agile, Scrum, REST API design, Microservices

Do not use skill bars (rated 7/10 or 4/5 stars). They are invisible to ATS and uninformative to recruiters.

Work experience bullet points

Each bullet should describe an action, name a specific technology, and where possible include a metric.

Strong bullet:

Designed and implemented a REST API service using Spring Boot and PostgreSQL to handle 50,000+ daily transaction records, reducing query latency by 35% through index optimisation.

Weak bullet:

Worked on backend development tasks as part of the team.

The strong version gives ATS: REST API, Spring Boot, PostgreSQL, transaction, query latency, index optimisation. The weak version gives almost nothing.

Three to five bullets per role is the right range. More becomes noise.

How to tailor your resume for specific companies

TCS (Tata Consultancy Services)

TCS uses SAP SuccessFactors and its own TCS NextStep portal. Key points:

  • TCS hires heavily for Java, .NET, Python, SAP, Salesforce, and testing roles
  • For lateral hires, the job description on TCS's portal is usually specific — match keywords exactly
  • Mention any TCS-related certifications (TCS Fresco Play, internal training completions) if you're an internal candidate
  • For freshers: TCS NQT score, InfyTQ certification equivalent (Xcelerate), and CGPA are all hard-filtered

Infosys

Infosys uses a mix of SAP SuccessFactors and their own portal. They hire significantly for:

  • Java full stack, .NET, Python, SAP, Oracle, Salesforce, ServiceNow, Data Engineering
  • InfyTQ completion is a meaningful keyword for freshers
  • Infosys BPM and Infosys BPO have separate hiring with different keyword profiles

Wipro

Wipro uses Workday. Primary hiring areas:

  • Java, Python, testing (Selenium, Appium), cloud (AWS, Azure), SAP, Oracle
  • Wipro Topgun and internal learning completions matter for internal mobility
  • For freshers: Wipro WILP program has its own assessment, but the resume still passes through ATS for eligibility checks

HCL Technologies

HCL uses iCIMS and SAP SuccessFactors. Strong hiring in:

  • Infrastructure services (Linux, Windows Server, networking, VMware, ITIL)
  • Application development (Java, .NET, Python)
  • Digital transformation (cloud, DevOps, ServiceNow, Salesforce)

Accenture India

Accenture uses Workday globally including for India. Key differentiation:

  • Accenture India hires for both services (offshore delivery) and capability network roles
  • Technology consulting roles require domain keywords alongside tech: BFSI, retail, manufacturing, supply chain
  • Accenture strongly values cloud certifications — AWS, Azure, GCP certifications are high-value keywords

Tech product companies (Amazon, Google, Microsoft India)

These use global Workday or proprietary ATS instances. Resume expectations:

  • 1–2 pages maximum; concise bullet points
  • Metric-driven accomplishments are expected at every level
  • No photo, no personal details
  • Problem-solving and system design keywords for senior roles: distributed systems, scalability, high availability, system design
