Sales representative resume: examples, skills & how to pass ATS
Sales is one of the largest job categories in the US — approximately 14 million workers — and one of the most competitive to get into at the top end. The difference between a shortlisted sales resume and a rejected one almost always comes down to one thing: numbers. If your resume doesn't show quota attainment, pipeline values, or revenue generated, it reads like every other applicant's.
Sales hiring managers spend about 10 seconds on a resume before deciding whether to read further. They're looking for evidence of performance — not responsibilities, not soft skills, not a list of CRM tools. Evidence that you can sell.
This guide covers every type of sales role, from SDR to enterprise AE to field sales, and shows you exactly how to present your performance data.
The types of sales roles and how their resumes differ
Sales is not one job. Before writing, be clear about which type of role you're targeting, because the keywords, metrics, and structure differ significantly:
- SDR / BDR (Sales Development Rep / Business Development Rep): Outbound prospecting, cold calling, email sequencing. Key metrics: meetings booked, call volume, email response rates, SQLs generated.
- Account Executive (AE): Full sales cycle, closing deals. Key metrics: quota attainment, average deal size, win rate, sales cycle length.
- Account Manager: Renewals, upsells, customer success adjacency. Key metrics: net revenue retention (NRR), upsell %, churn rate, customer satisfaction (NPS).
- Field Sales: Territory-based, in-person. Key metrics: territory revenue, new accounts opened, travel efficiency.
- Retail Sales: Consumer-facing, transactional. Key metrics: units per transaction (UPT), average transaction value, conversion rate, store ranking.
- Sales Manager: Team leadership. Key metrics: team quota attainment, rep ramp time, team headcount, revenue managed.
Target your resume at one role type. A generic "sales professional" resume gets screened out for everything.
Structure for a sales resume
- Contact information
- Professional summary (3–4 lines — include your best metric here)
- Work experience (reverse chronological — this carries everything)
- Skills
- Education
- Certifications (optional)
Sales resumes are experience-first. Unlike some other professions, a skills block or certifications section is secondary — your track record is what gets read first.
Work experience: how to write sales bullets
Every sales bullet should answer: how much, how often, compared to what?
Weak:
Responsible for outbound prospecting and booking meetings for the account executive team.
Strong:
Averaged 85 cold calls and 40 personalised outbound emails per day. Booked 22–28 qualified meetings per month for a team of 4 AEs — 130% of SDR quota for 3 consecutive quarters.
More strong sales bullets:
- Closed $1.4M in new ARR in FY2025, finishing at 118% of annual quota. Largest single deal: $180K TCV, 6-month sales cycle, competing against 3 enterprise vendors.
- Managed a portfolio of 45 SMB accounts generating $2.2M in annual recurring revenue. Achieved 108% net revenue retention through proactive QBRs and upsell conversations.
- Opened 14 new enterprise accounts in a greenfield territory in the first 12 months, generating $620K in first-year revenue against a $500K target.
- Reduced average sales cycle from 74 days to 48 days by implementing a structured discovery call framework and tightening qualification criteria (MEDDIC).
- Ranked #2 of 18 AEs in Q3 2025 for new logo acquisition; recognised as "Rep of the Quarter" twice in 12 months.
- Built and managed an outbound sequence library of 24 personalised cadences in Outreach; sequences drove a 32% reply rate vs. the team average of 19%.
The formula: metric achieved + context (quota %, team rank, territory size) + how you did it
Metrics to include on a sales resume
Use real numbers wherever possible. If you can't share exact revenue figures due to confidentiality, use percentages or relative comparisons:
| What to measure | How to express it |
|---|---|
| Quota attainment | "118% of quota" or "finished top 5 of 22 reps" |
| Revenue generated | "$1.4M ARR" or "~$1M+ in closed revenue" |
| Pipeline | "Built $3.2M pipeline from scratch in a new territory" |
| Activity volume | "90 calls/day, 40 emails/day" |
| Win rate | "42% win rate vs. 31% team average" |
| Retention | "108% net revenue retention" |
| Deal size | "Average deal size $28K" |
| Rankings | "#3 of 24 reps nationally" or "top 10% performer" |
If you're in retail or consumer sales, your metrics look different: conversion rate, units per transaction, store rank, customer satisfaction score, attachment rate.
Skills section for sales reps
CRM & Sales Tools: Salesforce, HubSpot, Pipedrive, Zoho CRM, Microsoft Dynamics Outbound & Sequencing: Outreach, SalesLoft, Apollo.io, ZoomInfo, LinkedIn Sales Navigator Communication & Demo: Zoom, Gong, Chorus, Loom, Calendly Sales Methodologies: MEDDIC, SPIN Selling, Challenger Sale, Sandler, Gap Selling, solution selling Reporting: Salesforce dashboards, Excel (pipeline tracking), Tableau (sales analytics) Skills: Cold calling, discovery, objection handling, contract negotiation, territory planning, forecasting
List only the CRM and tools you've actually used. "Salesforce" without any context (reports, dashboards, pipeline management) is a red flag if asked about it in an interview.

Passing ATS as a sales rep
Sales ATS filters are primarily keyword-driven. Key terms to include:
- Your CRM by exact name: Salesforce, HubSpot, Pipedrive
- Sales methodology abbreviations: MEDDIC, SPIN, Challenger
- Role-level titles: SDR, BDR, AE, Account Executive, Account Manager, Sales Manager
- Revenue language: ARR, MRR, ACV, TCV, quota attainment, pipeline
- Industry keywords matching the employer's sector (SaaS, med devices, financial services)
Mirror the job posting's exact terminology. If they say "Business Development Representative" and you've only written "SDR," use both.
Frequently asked questions about sales resumes
Should I include commission figures? Quota attainment percentages and rankings are more useful than raw commission numbers (which vary too much by plan). "118% of quota" or "top 5 of 22 reps" is stronger signal than "$120K OTE."
What if I missed quota? Focus on trajectory ("improved from 82% to 97% quota attainment over 3 quarters") or relative performance ("finished in the top half of the team despite a difficult macro environment in Q3"). Selective framing is legitimate — lying is not.
How do I write a sales resume for my first sales job? Lead with transferable skills: customer-facing experience, communication, any data showing persuasion or results (conversion rates at a retail job, fundraising for a club, tutoring outcomes). Pair this with a certification (HubSpot Sales Certification, Sandler Foundations) and a clear summary targeting SDR or entry-level sales roles.
How long should a sales resume be? One page for under 5 years of experience. Two pages is acceptable for senior AEs, managers, and directors with a meaningful track record to show.
